Story written by OB Kirstopher Archer
After successfully negotiating regional qualifying at Fixby in Yorkshire, our team of Kris Archer (capt), Carl Adams, Marcus Stam, John Hargreaves, Dominic Barnes and Josh Sims took part in the finals in early October. The venues are the magnificent links courses of Hunstanton and Brancaster in Norfolk and the format is scratch match play foursomes. Regional qualifying reduces the field from over 100 initial entrants down to the top 48 schools.
We had a tough draw and progressed past Mill Hill - 3-0, St George's Weybridge -3-0, Charterhouse 2-1, Epsom ( alma mater of our Headmaster Paul Vickers – himself an accomplished golfer) 2- 1 and George Heriot's 2-1. We then faced the formidable challenge of the famed sporting school, Millfield, in the finals. All of the team performed well and the result was 2.5 – 0.5 in our favour.
Throughout the event, there were some very close finishes with every team member having to make a significant contribution at critical moments.
This is the fourth Old Birkonian win since 2011 – a significant achievement against the resources of some very large schools – some of whom run golf scholarship programmes and even have their own on site golf courses.
