I have been running competitively in Canada for nearly 50 years, occasionally winning a national title (for the last 2 years I've been 5K national champion in my very senior age group). But at 60 my ankles became painful so I ran less, and alternated running with biking, cross-country skiing and swimming. It took a while to dawn on me that I was effectively training for a triathlon. So I tried a tri and it went well. In 2023 I qualified for the Canadian team to the World sprint triathlon (age group) at Hamburg and came second in my age group. I qualified again this year for the World's in Torremolinos in Spain and lo and behold, I won!! So Birkenhead School can claim it has a World Champion among its OBs.
I still lecture occasionally (I am Professor Emeritus at York University in Toronto) but mainly concentrate on research into various geographical issues. Currently I have a substantial grant to research the mobility of persons with various disabilities. Our field work in Indonesia, most countries in Western Europe, and Canada is now complete, and with research colleagues in Austria and Indonesia we are starting to publish our results. Should anyone be interested, the project is described at: https://www.yorku.ca/research/ycar/velomobility-for-disability/
